10th Season of Great Minds, Great Ideas Lecture Series Kicks off in September

Lectures in Cazenovia and Manlius to explore lives and work of important thinkers

— Cazenovia College will begin the 10th season of its Great Minds, Great Ideas Lecture Series on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Cazenovia Public Library and The Manlius Public Library. The 2013-14 series, which presents two lectures in the fall — September and October — and two lectures in the spring — March and April — features noted Cazenovia College faculty members stepping off campus and going out into the Cazenovia and Manlius communities. Each presenter will discuss the lives and work of important thinkers who opened doors of opportunity for the human spirit.

The Series lineup includes the following lectures:

“Jim Valvano — Don’t Ever Give Up!” presented by Dr. Michelle Brimecombe, assistant professor and sport management director, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Cazenovia Public Library and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Manlius Library.

Valvano has been known for his determination, motivation and spirit during his life. More than a simple college basketball coach, Valvano often reminded individuals not to give up on dreams. His most famous words “don’t give up … don’t ever give up” ring true to the hearts of millions of people. Although Valvano lost his battle with cancer, he reminds those in and out of sport to always push forward no matter what.

Dr. Michelle Brimecombe is an assistant professor and sport management director at Cazenovia College. She teaches and advises within the management division in a variety of sport related courses. Her specialty area is the organizational behavior within sport. A native of the state of Maine, Brimecombe earned her doctorate in sport management from Florida State University.

“Salk’s Legacy: What’s Poe Got to Do With it?” presented by Dr. Barbara Hager, professor of biology and program director of biology and environmental biology programs, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Manlius Library and at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at the Cazenovia Public Library.
