Common Grounds seeks service learning coordinator

Community service is part of the foundation of the Cazenovia area and what makes it special. From volunteer firefighters to CAVAC, CazCares, CRIS, Pop Warner and the Garden Club, countless community members give of themselves to make Cazenovia a better place. In recent years, since Cazenovia Central Schools added a community service requirement, young people have added thousands of hours of assistance to the equation.

This fall, Common Grounds and Project CAFÉ hope to partner with the school and other local organizations to add a new dimension to Cazenovia’s rich tradition — the element of service learning. A common definition of service learning is “a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility and strengthen communities.” The approach is a major component of the educational experience at numerous institutions including LeMoyne College here in Central New York.

Common Grounds is seeking a Service Learning Coordinator for the Cazenovia community to begin in the near future. The part-time position will network with local organizations to inventory existing service opportunities, identify new needs and facilitate opportunities to serve for high school students and others. Successful candidates will be self-starters, have a passion for service and excellent communication skills. Technical savvy and/or experience with service learning are a plus. By enhancing the experience of the hundreds of citizens already engaged in community service and creating new opportunities for others to serve, the goal will be to add substantially to the community’s already-strong ethic of serving others.
