The shared lakefront access in Mr. Green’s proposal impinges upon a wetland area at the mouth of the stream. “Wetlands provide a sophisticated water filtering and management system critical to the vitality of the lake. Wetlands can be large or small, some wet all year long, others submerged in periodic flooding. They protect water quality by helping remove nutrients, sediment, and pollution carried to the lake through storm water runoff. They are irreplaceable” -- Lake George Waterkeeper.
If our town allows Mr. Green’s proposal to go forward with little regard to the future health of our lake, more of such development will surely follow suit. Now is the time for us to take a stand and take the necessary steps to ensure the preservation of our incredibly valuable treasure: Skaneateles Lake. Allowing more and more development, especially in fragile and critical areas, is a recipe for disaster.
