Cazenovia The Cazenovia Rowing Club is celebrating its 20th Anniversary on Saturday, Aug. 10, with a party under the tent in Lakeland Park adjacent to Carpenter’s Barn. More than 200 invitations have been extended to past and present Scholastic and Master rowers, coaches and community leaders who have assisted the club in its on-going programs throughout its 20-year history.
“The Cazenovia Rowing Club is truly an extended family,” said Kathy Rushworth, Co-President of the Club. “We spend many hours together in practice and competition and value one another’s contributions on and off the water. The anniversary event is an opportunity for all of us to recognize and celebrate what the sport of rowing and the club add to our lives.”
The Club began in the mid-1980s, rowing out of a variety of sites including the Cazenovia Yacht Club and club-member Sandra Rogers’ docks on the west side of the lake. In 1993, a 501C-3, not-for-profit organization was officially formed as the Cazenovia Rowing Club and the club moved to its current set of docks at Gypsy Bay. The club’s fleet has grown from a single wooden boat to nine sweep and sculling boats with many privately owned single or double sculling boats adding to the fleet.
The Cazenovia Rowing Club currently offers coached programs from April through the end of October for both Scholastic and Master Rowers. In the winter months, the Masters have trained with coaches at Syracuse University utilizing the SU crew teams’ tanks, which simulate the sensation of rowing on water. Throughout the coached season, guest coaches are invited to work with Master rowers in a clinic format. In addition, over the past three years the club has utilized the refurbished Carpenter’s Barn, for winter work outs and to accommodate foul weather practices.
“The access to Carpenter’s Barn has given the club the opportunity to train year round, as well as provide our coach with a venue for practices during inclement weather,” Rushworth said. “This access will help ensure the Cazenovia Rowing Club is around for another 20 years by providing our members — both Scholastic and Masters — with more opportunities to train and improve.”
