— The manager said people had been calling in all week to share memories at Friendly’s with the employees.

“I had one woman call me, crying, to say she met her husband here and they’re now married with two kids and they bring their kids here every other weekend,” the manager said. “A lot of people are attached to it.”

“My mom and I would always get coffee ice cream with hot fudge sauce,” said Amy Lamprey Kruse, via Facebook. “So many great memories there from my childhood. I’m sad to see its closing.”

“I can’t believe it is closing for good,” said Peter Tuttle, also on Facebook. “Glad we stopped in for lunch the day we arrived in town for the July 4 family reunion. I can remember my mom taking each of her grandchildren there on the last day of school each year. Sometimes I would get to tag along and watch a niece or nephew order a sundae (and actually finish the thing!”

It was announced on July 29 that the Fayetteville Friendly’s and the Liverpool Friendly’s would close later that week, alongside 6 other stores in Upstate New York. The other five Friendly’s in the Syracuse area will stay open, including the one on Erie Boulevard in DeWitt. Friendly’s Ice Cream LLC is acquiring the remaining 35 York stores from Kessler Family LLC.

As of last week, Village of Fayetteville officials don’t know of any plans for a new business to fill the vacant spot.
