Along the Lakeshore: April 24

Deer, duck nesting habits, trip to Rochester

Chris Pitman used to hunt at the point near the creek. He also trapped ducks in cages and banded them for the DEC. I asked him how to tell a greater from a lesser scaup. He says if you have one of each on the table in front of you, the lesser scaup has extra white on the wing. The sibley identity card shows that feature quite clearly, but it can be seen only if the wings are extended.

Mr. Lemon has had a very quiet week. The highlight was a trip to the University of Rochester and a walk around part of the campus. I had never been there before and it is very handsome. My granddaughter, Curt’s youngest, is really into lacrosse and the coach wanted her to spend some time with the team and attend a few classes. She has also been accepted at William Smith and it is a tough choice because Curt went to Hobart, but the UR coach was a real charmer and I suspect Hannah will be on the banks of the Genesee next September.

With spring coming on, I had meant to stop and talk to the man with the orange panels on his jacket who walks around the village. I’ve now discovered that his name is Alvin Burch. Mystery solved.
