Big rally pushes J-D baseball past CBA

Six-run fifth inning key to Rams' 10-2 win

— The Brothers' Mason Garlatti stepped up to bat with two outs and runners on first and second. He dropped a single in front of Lenish in left field. Lenish took the ball cleanly and fired home with Webb Little looking to cut into the Rams’ lead.

The ball beat Little to the plate by a couple steps, providing catcher Paul Fitzgibbons plenty of time to apply the tag and end the threat.

Then the game blew open.

CBA pitcher Emmett Dunn hadn’t made it past the fourth inning in his first two starts of the season, both wins, so Dotterer charted new territory by leaving him in.

Dunn opened the inning by allowing a walk to Chris Lenish, a single to Fitzgibbons, a walk to John Werbowsky, a single to Jimmy Sinopoli and a walk to Crisalli. Two runs crossed the plate before Dotterer brought in Mike Lanzafame with the bases loaded and no outs.

“He [Dunn] started to lose a little bit of velocity,” Dera said. “He got up to I think about the 65 pitch mark at that time. So we could wait and be a little bit more patient.”

Lanzafame walked Dylan McGee to bring in a third run, followed by Canfield's second single of the day to bring Sinopoli home. Lenish took a hit-by-pitch in his second at-bat of the inning, scoring Crisalli. A Lanzafame wild pitch brought Dylan McGee in for the sixth and final run.

Though his team came into the game undefeated, Dotterer did not despair.

“They showed me more than they’ve showed me in the wins,” Dotterer said, speaking highly of Dunn, a sophomore. “He has the potential whether he realizes it or not. He’s got some chutzpah. He doesn’t carry baggage (into) the next day.”

Fitzgibbons went two-for-three and scored two runs. Werbowsky and Crisalli both hit 1-for-3 with two runs and Crisalli added two RBIs. Webb Little and Mason Garlatti drove in the only Brothers runs scored by Spinoso and Little.

CBA travels to face Homer on Thursday, while J-D goes to Fulton, just three days after blanking them 11-0 at home.
