Optimists announce April student of the month

— The Baldwinsville Optimist Club is pleased to announce that Nicole Stephenson has been chosen to be its Student of the Month for April.

Stephenson is a senior at Baker High School who has been a high honors student since seventh grade. She is currently taking advanced placement Spanish, advanced algebra and trig, stage and screen (English), participation in government and economics, and O.C.C. extension physics and British Literature for college credits. She has previously completed three years of honors English courses and an advanced placement history course. She will receive an Advanced Regents Diploma upon graduation and plans to pursue a major in English at college with the goal of becoming an English teacher.

Last year, she wrote an essay titled “Salvation in Books,” which is featured on the website thisibelieve.org, a not-for-profit organization that engages individuals of all ages in sharing their beliefs and values through writing. She is only the second Baker student to have an essay featured on the website.

Stephenson plays the vibraphone (a form of the xylophone) in the drum line. She played the synthesizer in the Baldwinsville Marching Band. She has played piano for many years as well.

In addition to marching band and drum line, Stephenson is editor in chief of the Baker High School student newspaper and she spent one year volunteering in a mentoring program working with elementary students by helping them with their academic studies.

Stephenson is very active in her church, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, having helped to form and lead its youth groups, as well as having been a religious education teacher and Bible school leader. She spent a week in the inner city of Buffalo working to rehab a half-way house and the following summer she spent that week working with extremely handicapped children. She has participated in car washes, hot dog sales and plant sales for the youth group as well as helping to serve the homeless people at the Samaritan Center in Syracuse. She organized and run a “Kids Night Out” project for her church as well.

Stephenson’s parents are Richard and Deborah Stephenson and she has younger brother, Justin.

The Baldwinsville Optimist Student of the Month program is cooperative project with the Baker High School Guidance Department.
