EDITORIAL: All walks of life welcome

— Volunteer fire departments across New York State will open their doors to local residents Saturday, April 27, and Sunday, April 28, as part of the third annual RecruitNY statewide volunteer firefighter recruitment effort, which coincides with National Volunteer Week.

This includes the Baldwinsville Volunteer Fire Company, which will once again take part in this recruitment drive by opening Fire Station No. 1 (7911 Crego Road) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 27.

Throughout the day, the BVFC will conduct tours of the station, display and demonstrate the various tools and equipment affiliated with its operation and have activities for visitors to participate in. BVFC members will discuss the requirements to become a volunteer, and answer questions regarding involvement in the organization, as well.

RecruitNY is designed to help increase volunteer membership, which has suffered over the last few years due to various factors including the stagnant economy. This effort has proven a success in past years and is a key initiative to help bolster membership numbers so fire departments can continue to provide the optimum level of protection to their local residents.

If you are interested in volunteering your time, be sure to visit Fire Station No. 1 to see how you can help your local fire company.

“Our recruitment is not limited to only those people who want to enter a burning building to extinguish a fire,” said BVFC President Tom Perkins. “We are in need of support people as well as firefighters. Perhaps you have a skill that we can use. Stop by our open house and tell us what you may have to offer and we can find a place for you.”
