Manlius Fayetteville-Manlius Girl Scout Troop 10526 is establishing a local “Plant A Row For The Hungry” (PAR) project to benefit FM Community Outreach Food Pantry. PAR is a national people-helping-people program, started in 1995 by the Garden Writers Association (GWA), which encourages gardeners to grow a little extra and donate the produce to food relief organizations serving the homeless and hungry in their communities.
The national goal is to raise more than one million pounds of produce each year. Since fresh produce can be expensive, this program strives to make healthy, fresh produce more accessible to those in need. Hunger is a growing need in our community and across the country. Locally, the F-M Community Outreach Food Pantry serves over 150 families totaling over 450 people. One-third of these clients are seniors. It provides over 5,000 meals per month and distributes over 800 cans of vegetables and 800 cans of fruit per month. In addition, summer brings further challenges for some families because school is out and school-age children who would be able to take advantage of school lunch assistance programs during the year do not have it available to them in the summer. By donating to FM Community Outreach and other local food pantries you can help feed those children and families in need as well. Girl Scout Troop 10526 wants to work with the community to increase awareness and provide additional resources to help.
F-M Cadette Girl Scout Troop 10526 is comprised of four eighth-grade girls from Manlius and Cazenovia who have been together as a troop since second grade; Olivia Mulloy, Taylor Ketcham, Stephanie O’Malley and Gillian Hall. They are working together on earning their Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. Earning the Silver Award requires several steps, the final of which is doing a sustainable community service project. The troop hopes this program will encourage the community to not only help them achieve their goal, but to donate to the hungry long after the project is completed.
