Let’s have open discussion on Gothic Cottage future

To the editor:

Thanks Frolic Taylor for your letter imploring more thought and input from the community prior to allowing a wonderful example of period architecture to be forever ruined for the purpose of progress.

From my first visit to the Gothic Cottage, now our town offices, I was impressed by the original details left intact, and the family portraits on the wall testifying to the generations which once inhabited the home and the generosity which bestowed the home to Cazenovia. I gained appreciation not only of the house, but of this community which valued its unique character.

There are other properties which could be used for the purposes of our town offices that wouldn't require the decimation of a gem along Albany Street. The blue Napa building and adjacent auto repair shop have been an eyesore since I moved here in 2004 and show no promise of remaining other than abandoned properties, which tend to decrease the value of the historic business district. There is substantial square footage and I wonder if the town has considered that the purchase of that property would be serving two purposes: the beautification of the village and saving “Bob O Link.”

Like Taylor, I lament the decisions that seem to be made behind closed doors. Let’s have public input by holding an open discussion to explore other options.
