West Genesee’s boys cross country team was placed in the no. 12 spot in the latest state Class A rankings, well behind Liverpool, who was perched at no. 2. But it sure didn’t seem that way in last Wednesday’s meet, where the Wildcats gathered together and earned an impressive 15-38 victory over the Warriors. Will Randall, on his home course, led the pack, prevailing in 16 minutes, 53 seconds, while Jack Erhard was second in 17 minutes flat and Nate Conroy was third in 17:03. Just behind them, David Leff made his way to fourth place, in 17:27, with Sean Beney (17:49), Mike Lannon (17:53) and Matt Romano (18:00) also running well. Connor Buck and Alex Christensen both finished in 17:59, which were Liverpool’s best efforts. West Genesee’s girls team lost, 20-35, to Liverpool, despite Laura Leff tearing through her home course in 19:02 to beat the Warriors’ Abby McNamara (20:01) and the field by nearly a full minute. The Warriors swept through the second through sixth spots, thanks to McNamara, Morgan Mahoney (20:08), Juliana Basla (20:08), Maia Henry (20:54) and Morgan Chewning-Kulick (21:02). Maria Matkowski, in 21:10.1, edged teammate Elise Dunshee (21:10.7) for seventh place, with Lindsay Weaver (21:27) and Sara Ferranti (21:48) also in the top 10. As that went on, Jordan-Elbridge was sweeping Solvay, prevailing 21-45 on the boys side and 20-49 on the girls side in a meet at Long Branch Park. The boys Eagles, no. 4 in the latest state Class C rankings, saw Nate Hollis and Jack Gugel pull away from the field, Hollis winning in 16:57 and Gugel second in 16:58. Solvay countered with Eric Goodrich taking third place, in 17:28, with teammate Isaiah Lee (17:30 in fourth place. But J-E’s Hunter Brunell rolled to fifth place, in 17:42, and the Eagles took the next three spots, too, as Jake Patterson and Austin Milton both finished in 18:13 and Alex Parkolap (19:20) was eighth. David Fixler was 10th (19:56) behind Solvay’s Nate Carr (19:47), who was ninth. Even without Abby Gugel in the lineup, and with Solvay’s Ashlee Riggins taking the individual race in 23:13, J-E cruised in the girls race, with Emily Kuehnle (25:32), Marissa Malvaso (25:33) and Miranda Malvaso (25:34) in the next three spots. Natalie Emerick edged Emily Mills for fifth place, though both finished in 26:28, with Lauren Hubbs (26:51) and Dominique Bigness (27:20) behind them. Westhill/Bishop Ludden swept both sides of its meet against CBA. The top boys runners stayed together as Kyle Fitch won in 17:56, ahead of Dan DeMauro, Josh Owens and Liam Rodgers, each of whom posted equal times of 18:01. Alec Walsh, who finished sixth in 18:45, led the next group, which included Garnet Remillard in seventh place in 18:45. Vincenzo Carr (18:53) edged Brian Celeste (18:54) for eighth place as Cain Ballard (19:17) finished 10th. For the Westhill/Ludden girls, who prevailed over CBA 15-50, Genny Corcoran prevailed in 21:26, with Emily Washburn second in 20:45. Mary Washburn made her way to fourth place in 21:59 as Annibel Coolican (22:58), Molly Clark (23:07), Caroline Black (24:31), Meghan Evans (25:10) and Lisa Bogardus (25:44) occupied the sixth through 10th spots. In an otherwise quiet Saturday, Marcellus would finish third in both of the Small School divisions at the Tully Invitational, the boys getting 93 points, just behind Hannibal (75 points) and Jamesville-DeWitt (79 points), the girls earning 106 points behind Tully (27 points) and Cazenovia (59 points). But it was Rachel Garn winning the girls Small School race, her time of 19:04.5 more than half a minute better than Tully’s Ashleigh Crawford.
