Within a five-day span, the Cazenovia boys soccer team roared through three different opponents and, by doing so, reached double digits in the win column again. This stretch began last Tuesday afternoon, at the Sean Googin Sports Complex, where the Lakers found itself trailing Phoenix at halftime, only to wake up and throttle the Firebirds in the second half en route to a 7-1 victory. Though Cazenovia controlled the flow of play in the first 40 minutes, it could not finish off any of its chances, and Kyle Demo’s goal, assisted by Zach Schlatter, had Phoenix in front 1-0 as they went to the break. Whatever was said by coach Adam Reynolds seemed to work, because once the Lakers got on the board early in the second half, a tidal wave of goals followed. Henry Mann, with two goals and one assist, and Ross Gerber, with a goal and two assists, led the charge, with Kevin Porter adding a goal and assist. Will Fellows, Teo Lang and Cole Willard also found the net, with Peter Burr earning a pair of assists and Eli LaGorga adding an assist. Cazenovia moved from there to Thursday’s game against Jordan-Elbridge, which proved a bit less stressful, though the Lakers had to work all night to put away the Eagles 3-1. It was only 1-0 at halftime, Cazenovia constantly thwarted by the strong work of J-E goalie Max Bondgren, who finished the night with 14 saves. Gradually, though, the Lakers’ pressure took enough of a toll, and it overcame Javier Wood’s second-half goal with tallies from Porter, Mann and Derek White, with Porter also contributing an assist. In Saturday’s non-league home game against a dangerous side from Rome Free Academy, the Lakers made it four wins in a row, blanking the Black Knights 2-0, just as it had done back on Aug. 31 in the season opener at RFA Stadium. A goal in each half proved ample, as Mann and LaGorga both found the net and Porter tacked on an assist. Cazenovia’s defense, anchored by Fellows, Evan Cornell and Tom McNaney, cracked down on RFA, only allowing three shots to reach Clabeaux. Other than a Tuesday-night visit from Solvay that is Cazenovia’s last regular-season home game, the Lakers rest and practice for an exciting closing stretch with big road tests against defending Class B champion Westhill (Oct. 15) and Skaneateles (Oct. 18).
