The rains stopped in time for a trio of local girls high school golfers to make their way to SUNY-Delhi’s course for the 2013 edition of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship tournament.
Jamesville-DeWitt teammates Molly Hair and Victoria Roney were part of the Section III squad, as was Fayetteville-Manlius’ Allison Donella. Another Hornets golfer, Hannah Powers, served as an alternate, but did not get in the tournament.
On a wet, hilly SUNY-Delhi course, Hair got off to a terrific start in Saturday’s opening round, shooting an 81 that put her in a tie for 21st place in the 79-player field. Only the Auburn duo of Larissa Carter (77) and Lindsay May (79) did better among the Section III team.
Meanwhile, Roney and Donella both had matching rounds of 96, looking to fare better as the sun broke out for Sunday’s final round – and both would do so.
Donella improved 10 shots, to an 86, to finish at 182 and tie for 47th place, while Roney managed a 91, a five-shot improvement, to get to 187 and finish alone in 56th. Meanwhile, Hair fell seven shots to an 88, but still managed, with 169, to share 28th place.
Carter, with her totals of 77 and 74, ended up in third place, as Rochester Mercy’s Christine Schmitt, with 72 and 71, won the state championship with 143, eight shots better than Carter and six shots ahead of the runner-up, Rye’s Alexis Hios.
As to the other Section III golfers, May, just a seventh-grader, had a 163 to tie for 18th, while another Auburn golfer, Kaitlin Hylwa, was further back at 193. Baldwinsville’s Katie Walsh shot a pair of 82s to finish solo 21st as Cicero-North Syracuse’s Brianna Sovring (181) and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Amanda Snizek (184) followed.
In the team standings, Section III, with 1,194, finished fifth out of nine teams. Section V, led by Schmitt, won over Section I, 1,118 to 1,136.
