When all the dust from a week of post-season Section III boys tennis settled, Baldwinsville’s duo of Dan Kot and Grady Schmidt had earned a spot in the state championships with a timely victory in doubles. The sectional state qualifier took place Thursday and Friday at Utica Parkway Courts. Only the top three singles players and doubles teams would advance to this weekend’s state tournament at the National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens. Kot and Schmidt really caught fire here, winning in the opening round and then, in the quarterfinals, gaining revenge on West Genesee’s duo of Brent and Garrett Boleslav, winning a 7-6, 6-4 decision to knock out the 2012 state tournament qualifiers, the same duo that beat Kot and Schmidt earlier in the week. Then, in the semifinal, Kot and Schmidt ran into another tough brother tandem, CBA’s Colin and Matt Nardella, and lost by scores of 6-2 and 6-0. Now they would have to win the third-place match in order to advance to the state tournament. In that pivotal match at Drumlins, Kot and Schmidt took on F-M’s duo of Kenny Friedman and Wilbert Geng, and by a 6-4, 6-0 margin, the B’ville pair was on their way to New York City. They join the Nardellas, plus the other F-M team of Josh Druger and Dan Miron, along with singles standouts Ethan Wilcox (Skaneateles), Abe Davis and Robert Dotterer (both from Jamesville-DeWitt), as the Section III squad vying for state honors. Earlier in the week, Hunter Cohen-Ciampchini was the only man that ended up preventing a Fayetteville-Manlius sweep in last week’s Section III Class A tournament at Syracuse University’s Skytop Tennis Complex. Cohen-Ciampchini made his way to the third singles final against the Hornets’ Oscar Reis, and though he struggled in the first set, Cohen-Ciampchini won when Reis had to withdraw one game into the second set. As a team, B’ville had 33 points, tying Auburn for second behind F-M’s winning mark of 66 points. Kot and Schmidt lost in the semifinals to the Boleslav brothers, but the outcome was different later in the week.
