Right from the start this spring, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team’s attack has centered around the ability of Kayla Dorrance to find someone cutting to the net and deliver the perfect pass to set up an easy goal. Never was Dorrance’s passing ability more on display than in last Tuesday’s game against Tully. In a game that might determine future playoff positioning, it was Dorrance making the difference as the Lakers defeated the Black Knights 16-10 to clinch a playoff berth. Every time Cazenovia made a serious offensive push, Dorrance would set herself up behind the net, wait for the cuts, and then deliver, a pattern that kept repeating to help Cazenovia move ahead of Tully 9-4 by halftime. With the margin established, the second half turned more active, the Black Knights trying to rally as Allison Bolt managed six goals and Ally McNerney turned up with three goals and two assists. Yet the Lakers matched every Tully surge with one of its own, and Dorrance did not let up until she had amassed 10 assists, giving her 61 for the season. Most of Dorrance’s passes went to Kelsey Henderson, who put up five goals, or Kristie Kleine, who found the net four times. Jessie Matt, Kali Cook, Madison Gabor, Emily Willard and Abbie McEntee had one goal apiece as Lauren Devine recorded eight saves. Cazenovia got some rest before hosting state Class C no. 2-ranked Skaneateles on Saturday afternoon, but still found those other Lakers too much to handle in a 20-7 defeat. Not only did Skaneateles set a torrid pace and score exactly 10 times in each half, it spread the attack around as 10 different players notched goals, with Hannah Logan (four goals), Alana Navaroli (three goals, three assists) and Kyla Sears (three goals) led the way. Also, the Skaneateles defense kept Dorrance from unleashing her trademark passes, even though Dorrance finished with a pair of goals. Kleine scored three times, while Grace Milmoe and Hailey Lavelle also found the net. At least with a 7-6 record, Cazenovia’s post-season berth was secure, as it played just once this week, hosting Westhill on Tuesday night.
