Properly tested in close, character-building wins over Baldwinsville and Auburn at the end of March, the Skaneateles boys lacrosse team returned home and maintained that good form to move to 4-0. A key early-season test would come Friday, when the Lakers met reigning Section III Class C champion Homer. Again, it was close – and again, the Lakers came through with a victory, edging past the Trojans 11-10. Homer, who plays in Class B during the regular season but will move back to C for the playoffs, had already taken two losses, to Jamesville-DeWitt (20-7) and Cazenovia (13-11), and was determined to break out of that skid. But the Lakers still moved in front, 3-2, by the end of the first quarter, and blanked the Trojans in a second period dominated by the defenses. Up 4-2 at the break, Skaneateles would keep its poise as, throughout the second half, Homer would find its way past the strong defenses and score, Beau Riley leading the Trojans with four goals and one assist. Each time, the Lakers had a response, and normally it involved Tyler Strods, who put together one of his best individual performances, gaining four goals and four assists as his side held on. Owen Kuhns gained three goals and one assist, while Jack Dawley found the net twice. Jack Fabrizio managed one goal and one assist as Steven Bright also scored and Connor Hill picked up an assist. Despite all the late things thrown at him, goalie Max Smith still made 11 saves. Before this, the Lakers hosted Clinton last Monday at Hyatt Stadium, and broke out in a big way on the offensive end, especially in the first half of a 17-5 romp over the Warriors. In the first quarter alone, Skaneateles produced more goals (nine) than it did in the entire B’ville and Auburn games. That surge continued until the Lakers had a 13-2 edge on Clinton at halftime, allowing the reserves to play large portions of the second half. Tyler Strods, whose overtime goal beat B’ville on March 30, did much more here, pouring in six goals and adding a pair of assists to pace an otherwise deep and well-balanced attack. Steven Bright had two goals and two assists, with Owen Kuhns and Ryan Higman managing two goals apiece. Jack Fabrizio, Josh Kuhns, Connor Hill, Mark Goetzmann and Jack Dawley also scored, with Hill and Connor Gustafson getting single assists. The Lakers’ would go for five in a row Wednesday, against Manlius-Pebble Hill, before Tully shows up on Friday night to complete this Skaneateles four-game homestand.
