Cazenovia Cazenovia Laker Nolan Frisbey led the local squad onto the field against the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Red Devils for another spectacular game on Sept. 16. Cazenovia Pop Warner cheerleaders rounded up the pack onto the field for the National Anthem.
After winning its first two games of the season with a combined score of 54-0, VVS’ first play woke up the Laker defense with an 11-yard run up the middle. Led by linebacker Jake Macheda and defensive lineman Ben Knutsen, the Laker defense wouldn’t allow VVS to get an effective offensive drive.
While the Lakers had possession, the VVS defense played with confidence. Late in the first quarter, wing back James Pavelchack broke away from the Red Devils with a 42-yard touchdown run. The fans, cheerleaders and team all began cheering with the score as Cazenovia had gained six, and VVS was with zero.
VVS continued to battle. Defensive lineman, Ryan Wozniak, and defensive end Andrew Johnson took on the Red Devils with persistent, distinct tackles keeping the Devils out of the endzone.
Laker quarterback Patrick Nourse, scrambled 25 yards and the Lakers took a 14-0 lead to end the first half.
Beginning the third quarter, VVS continued battling the Lakers. The Laker defense proved ready for the challenge. Linebacker Tiernan Tormey, sacked the VVS quarterback, effectively stopping the drive. Cornerback Matthew “Macky” McLaughlin intercepted several VVS pass attempts.
The Laker offense crushed the spirit of the VVS Red Devils beginning the fourth quarter. Offensive linemen Casey Cunningham, Isaac Senehi, Joey Reidl and center CJ Monroe drove the ball to the Red Devils’ 12 yard line.
The Laker defense then stripped the ball from the VVS quarterback, ending the game with Cazenovia winning, 14-0.
