Beginning the pursuit of another OHSL Liberty division regular-season title, the Cazenovia girls cross country team handled Hannibal in last Wednesday’s league opener.
The 18-43 victory over the Warriors featured Cazenovia earning a top-three sweep. Jeanette Cudney had an impressive race, prevailing in 17 minutes, 36 seconds, while Megan Stanford finished second in 18:21 and Malone Gabor was third in 18:33.
Mimi Gabor, in a time of 19:04, claimed fifth place, just ahead of Margaret Wolsey, who was seventh in 19:09 to clinch the team win. Victoria Wright took eighth place in 19:18, with Adrien Owens earning ninth place in 19:56.
In the simultaneous boys meet, Cazenovia lost, 15-45, to Hannibal, ceding the top five positions to the Lakers, including Ryan Perry’s victory in a time of 15:03. Sean Satchwell got the Lakers on the board as he finished sixth in a clocking of 16:05.
Cazenovia would compete Saturday in the 61st annual Baldwinsville Invitational at Durgee Junior High School, where the girls Lakers would finish third in the Small School division with 127 points, just behind South Jefferson (121 points) for the runner-up spot as Tully won with 81 points.
Cudney broke into the top 10, claming eighth place in a time of 18:55.1, while Stanford was 14th in 20:09.2. Malone Gabor claimed 30th place in 20:52.3, four spots ahead of Mimi Gabor (21:00.4), with Wright getting to 41st place (21:13.8), Two spots better than Wolsey (21:23.5) in 43rd as Owens (21:51.4) was 60th.
Chittenango swept its OHSL Freedom division meet with Phoenix last Wednesday, beating the Firebirds 15-50 on the girls side and 17-38 on the boys side.
Anna Galbraith won the girls race, her time of 20:25 nearly a minute better than Phoenix’s Haylie Virginia. Kaitlyn Janczuk was third, in 23:33, one second ahead of Hayley Foran, while Shannon Bunce was fifth in 23:51, edging out Brooke Busa (23:52) as Kailey Calverese finished eighth.
