Lysander Parks and Recreation offers fall programming

Karate after school

Designed for kindergarten through fifth graders, this program will be held from 3:20 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays (Sept. 26 to Nov. 7) at Elden Elementary School. The goal is to teach self-defense, boxing, kickboxing and fitness while incorporating messages in regards to respect, discipline, confidence and goal setting. At the end of the program, students will participate in a graduation ceremony at Impact Martial Arts (80 Smokey Hollow Road) where the students will earn their white belts. Students are encouraged to join us at the dojo once a week to reinforce new skills.

Horseback Riding Lessons

Learn basic horsemanship and care of a horse, as well as parts of equipment (participants must wear hard-soled shoes with a heel) during this class held from 7 to 8 p.m. Mondays from Oct. 1 to 22 at Smoke Tree Farms, 8911 Plainville Road, Lysander. This class is for ages 7 and up including adults.

Vinyasa Yoga

Vinyasa classes, which require intermediate level, previous yoga experience, will be offered from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Wednesdays (Sept. 26 to Oct. 24) or from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. Thursdays (Sept. 27 to Oct. 25) at AM/PM Yoga Source Studio in Phoenix. The class heightens body awareness, strength and endurance. Vinyasa (Flow Yoga) is a class of continuous movement where one pose flows into another. The breath is synchronized with the movement and sets the length of the holding. This style is more aerobic and more challenging. No Vinyasa experience necessary but should have yoga experience and knowledge of proper alignment in yoga postures.

Putting up the apples

Come and cook with B’ville FACS teacher Chrissy Rode as she turns delicious New York State apples into applesauce, apple pie filling and apple jam. She offers insight into preserving sauces and jams and will explain which apples to cook and which ones to snack on. Come to this workshop, held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Sept. 29, at Baker High School, and you will leave with a tasty sample for your efforts.
