Skaneateles girls tennis has 3-0 week

Lakers shut out Pulaski, Grimes, Jordan-Elbridge

The Skaneateles girls tennis team earned its first victory of the 2012 season last Tuesday afternoon, putting together a 7-0 shutout of the Pulaski Blue Devils, the start of a week where it would be close to flawless.

In singles play against the Blue Devils, Olivia Gage claimed a default, but Katelyn Ellison did play and blanked Emily Fellers 6-0, 6-0, while Makenzi Herbst earned a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Samantha Keeney.

All four doubles matches were contested. Grace Magee and Kathryn Magee got past Kathleen Kinney and Kathryn Paye 6-2, 6-0. Liz Belinski and Angela Krouse joined in with a 6-1, 6-1 sweep over Diamond Broissoit and Shanika Scarborough.

In the other doubles matches, Maura McNeil and Bailey Parsons earned a point by topping Samantha Dawes and Libby Wansink 6-0, 6-1, while Avery Bird and Alaina Davis handled Allie Bonanno and Kelly Bushell 6-1, 6-3.

A second win quickly followed, Skaneateles routing Bishop Grimes by that same 7-0 margin. Only Gage found any real stress, pushed to three sets by Elizabeth Wolaver in singles before taking a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 victory.

Elsewhere in singles, Herbst blanked Danielle Erwin 6-0, 6-0, and Ellison rolled past Tina Hoag 6-1, 6-0. McNeil and Maddy Pinkney had the closest doubles match, still rolling past Marie Gibbons and Sarah Schultz 6-1, 6-2, with the teams of Magee-Magee, Belinski-Krouse and Bird-Davis dropping just two games in six sets between them.

Then the Lakers blanked Jordan-Elbridge 7-0 on Thursday afternoon, preserving the shutout when Gage, in third singles, rallied past Annalea O’Brien 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.

Herbst and Ellison won 6-1, 6-1 singles matches, beating, respectively, Morgan Conroy and Emma Stanton. In doubles, four matches featured one game surrendered, with everything else going in the Lakers’ favor.

Skaneateles, now with a 3-1 mark, plays three more times next week, taking on Westhill, Manlius-Pebble Hill and Marcellus.
