LETTERS: Waiting on the Y

— “With a mission to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy spirit, mind and body for all, our impact is felt when an individual makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child and when a community comes together for the common good,” from a mission statement on the website.

Whatever the decision, whichever of the three sites is chosen, the community will benefit, but why not sooner rather than later? While the other two locations would require starting from scratch, the Town Center Plaza is already a standing structure and it’s close to the school. Wouldn’t that choice be a no-brainer? The quicker the front doors open, the quicker the kids get off the streets, the healthier the neighborhoods are and perhaps even a life or two is saved. A local “Y” has that kind of power.

In “Field of Dreams,” Ray Kinsella hears a voice that whispers, “If you build it, he will come.”

There is a certain sound that pervades the inner walls of a YMCA. It is the sound of vitality, of joy, of life. The locals can’t wait to hear it, so build it and they will come.
