COLUMN: Library Focus - ereaders to be in circulation soon

— School is back in session and change is in the air. Our public computers are being upgraded to Windows 7. We’ve got lots of new titles for all ages, both physical and electronic, and we will soon be circulating ereaders loaded with a selection of popular titles for folks who aren’t quite ready to buy their own device yet.

In addition to the ability to place holds and make renewals from home, we also offer a world of resources available as close as your laptop including free music downloads from Freegal, online language instruction through Rocket languages, test preparation through Learning Express and job searching, resume and interview help through Job Now. Our newest resource, Universal Class, offers 500 free video based classes that you can pursue in the comfort of your home.

Online signups

Program sign up (with the exception of storytime) has moved online. You can sign up for classes from home or here at one of the reference desks by visiting our home page at bville.lib.ny.us and clicking on the programs link in the left-hand column. Click on the hand symbol to sign up. Those who include their email address will get automatic reminders before the program.

Job skills

Improve your job skills for free as we offer hands on classes for many of the most common programs in the work world at 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays. This month’s sessions include: Basics of PowerPoint (Sept. 12); Basics of Excel (Sept. 19); and Introduction to iPads and Tablet Computers (Sept. 26).

Genealogy class

Genealogists will tell you it’s a lot harder to track down your female ancestors but it isn’t impossible. Local expert Louise Creighton will help you jump the hurdles of shifting names and limited documentation with a hands-on online workshop from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12.
