Volunteers select location for Northwest Family YMCA

Regulatory approval and financing are next steps

— The YMCA is starting fresh in Greater Baldwinsville.

The volunteers who lead the YMCA of Greater Syracuse are dedicated to strengthening the community. That’s why they have approved a resolution to take the steps necessary to build the Northwest Family YMCA on River Road in Lysander.

The 49-acre property is to be donated by Gary Pooler, owner of the nearby Timber Banks development. The approvals this month, by both the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees of the YMCA of Greater Syracuse, ratify the location selected last month by the Greater Baldwinsville YMCA Board of Managers.

“The YMCA’s support for Greater Baldwinsville and this location is amazing,” said Cindy Dowd Greene, chair of the Greater Baldwinsville YMCA board. “Our volunteers know that building this Y will strengthen our community for generations. Our work now is to get the approvals needed to start construction.”

The next step is regulatory approval, a process led by the Town of Lysander that will include multiple agencies. The Y will work to make that process go as smoothly as possible, Dowd Greene said.

The final step is financial approval, which includes raising money and securing a loan, she said. Volunteers have been in close contact with many potential donors. The public fundraising campaign can begin within months of site plan approval, Dowd Greene said.

“We know that there are thousands of people in this community who want to see this Y built as soon as possible, so we think raising money will be relatively quick,” she said. “This is a fresh start. We still have a lot to do. We’re taking it step by step.”
