B’ville boys volleyball takes first loss to McQuaid

Girls Bees still unbeaten after more sweeps

Baldwinsville’s boys volleyball team maintained its hot streak all the way until Saturday, when it finally tripped up during a three-set defeat to Rochester McQuaid.

The Bees lost both of the first two sets 25-22, and dropped the third set to the Knights 25-17. Still, Anthony DeMarco had five kills and Shawn Calnan added four kills, while Grady Schmidt had three kills, Chris Drain picked up 10 assists.

That came at the tail end of a doubleheader where B’ville first had faced Cicero-North Syracuse and swept past the Northstars 25-17, 25-19, 25-18.

Consistent and powerful, the Bees featured Chris Drain getting 27 assists, most of those passes going to Calnan, who got 14 kills and three blocks. Schmidt and Zach Leo each had five kills, while Kevin Drain picked up four kills.

B”ville also dominated in last Tuesday in its own match at Liverpool, where it swept past the Warriors 25-14, 25-22, 25-21.

As usual, the Bees’ formula of rotating many players into the front line worked, all of them fed by Chris Drain, who picked up 30 assists. Calnan and Tom Ancillotti each picked up seven kills, with Kevin Drain and Corey Toscano each earning five kills. DeMarco and Leo earned four kills apiece.

To support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Baldwinsville girls volleyball team donned pink jerseys for last Monday night’s match at Liverpool, an impressive effort that led to a 25-10, 25-14, 25-17 sweep.

Against a Warriors side carrying a 7-5 record, B’ville was powerful on the front line as Madison Whitney picked up nine kills, while Allegra Lee Bell and Lexi Lagoy each got eight kills.

Maureen Thayer fed all of them with 23 assists, adding three kills and two aces as Rachel Aiello and Amanda May also finished with three kills. Danielle Sayler had three assists and three digs.
