SYRACUSE Do you have ideas for the future of Central New York? What would make the region more sustainable for the long-term?
The Central New York Regional Planning and Development Board is seeking public input in the development of the Vision CNY Regional Sustainability Plan. Vision CNY was initiated by the CNY RPDB with a $1 million grant from the New York State Cleaner Green Communities Program. Cleaner Greener Communities is an environmental initiative announced by Gov. Andrew Cuomo in 2011.
The Vision CNY Regional Sustainability Plan covers the five counties of Central New York including Cayuga, Cortland, Madison, Onondaga and Oswego, and covers one of 10 designated regions across the state. In 2013, approximately $90 million in state funding will be available from the Cleaner, Greener Communities Program to assist the 10 regions on a competitive basis to implement projects that support the goals and strategies of each regions plan. Plans and subsequent projects must identify and create opportunities for achieving carbon reductions, energy efficiency savings and/or renewable energy deployment while enhancing job creation, economic investment and development consistent with a region’s sustainability and REDC strategic plan.
The public can contribute to Vision CNY through a new website, visioncny.org. The website provides an opportunity for CNY residents to learn about the planning team and process, take an online “sustainability quiz,” and to contribute their ideas to promote sustainability through a message board, survey and tools that allow them to add photos and map existing or proposed green projects. The public is invited to visit the website and provide input that will help to shape the final Vision CNY Sustainability Plan. Work on Vision CNY was initiated in June 2012 and is scheduled for completion by January 2013.
“We are looking forward to receiving input from the residents of the Central New York Region in relation to promoting and implementing sustainability in their communities,” said David Bottar, executive director of the CNY RPDB. “By participating online through visioncny.org you can help to shape the future of our region.”
