Cicero churches unite for ecumenical service, seek food donations

— Thanksgiving is a time when people reflect on what they are grateful for — a roof over their heads, food in their bellies and the love of friends and family.

But for so many, this time of year is wrought with concern over how to pay increasing heating bills and how they will feed the family they love so much.

To help defray hunger for hundreds of residents who use local food pantries, four Cicero churches are teaming up this Thanksgiving season to collect food and other necessities needed to help those who need it during the tough times. At 7 p.m. Tuesday Nov. 20 an ecumenical Thanksgiving service will be held at Sacred Heart Church, 8229 S. Main St. in Cicero, and worshippers are asked to bring donations of food.

How you can help

Where: Sacred Heart Church, 8229 S. Main St., Cicero

Bring food item donations to this year’s service to help aid local food pantries. Individuals and families in need are urged to contact one of the local food pantries for assistance. Those who want to fight hunger are also encouraged to call the food pantries to learn more about how they can help.

The ecumenical effort brings together the Cicero and Brewerton United Methodist churches, Faith Lutheran Church and Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church. Food items can also be dropped at any of the four churches.

The goal is to collect 10,000 pounds of food.

The need is real and ever increasing, as a poor economy has had an effect on the number of people reaching out for assistance.

“The increase in the number of meals we have distributed during the period from June to September 2011 versus 2012 indicates an increase of about 12 percent,” said Sandy Poplawski, director of human development at Sacred Heart.
