Manlius Swan Pond renovations get going

The Manlius Swan Pond was recently drained as contractors dredged the pond, part of the village’s Phase One of the Swan Pond infrastructure renovation. The pond’s inhabitants, including swans Manny and Faye and their four cygnets, were moved to the lower pond.

— Hansen said that the crews will not only wash away the muck — they’ll be able to scrape the bottom and check the infrastructure to make sure the walls will be able to withstand another 20 to 30 years of holding water. She estimates that about four feet of muck has built up since the pond was last cleaned.

Manny and Faye, the pond’s resident swans, and their four cygnets have been moved to the Centre Pond just below the Swan Pond. The fish that normally populate the pond are being kept just a few blocks away, in the Perry Springs Park fish hatchery, until the project is completed.

Mayor Serafin said the project should be completed by mid-December. Phase Two will be further discussed once Phase One is finished, he said.
