Field Guide Series: Utilitarian Trees

At 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, Beaver Lake Nature Center will offer an in-depth look into the natural history of certain trees growing in this area. During Utilitarian Trees, a naturalist will focus on those species with traits that have made them valuable to people over the years. $5; registration required.

Trail Tales

Preschool-age children, accompanied by an adult, are invited to gather at Beaver Lake Nature Center for the popular Trail Tales program at 1 p.m. Thursdays, Nov. 1, 15 and 29. A naturalist reads two stories to the children and then leads the group on a hike themed to match the stories. FREE.

Weekend walks in November

Beaver Lake Nature Center invites visitors to join a naturalist for a free guided Weekend Walk at 2 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday in November. Each weekend features a different topic: Nov. 3 and 4 features nests and dens; Nov. 10 and 11 features birds that stick around; Nov. 17 and 18 features talking turkey; and Nov. 24 and 25 features wildlife preparing for winter.

Mission: Wolf

At 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, Beaver Lake Nature Center hosts the founders of Mission: Wolf of Silver Cliff, Colorado, for a program with live timber wolves. Mission: Wolf has evolved from a very remote sanctuary for wolves and wolf-dog hybrids into a leading nationwide force supporting wolf education and captive wolf welfare. This program will focus on dispelling the many myths people associate with the wolf, discouraging private ownership of wild animals as pets and supporting wild habitat protection. $15; registration required.

Holiday Herbal Hors d’oeuvres

Beaver Lake Nature Center celebrates the culinary properties of herbs with Holiday Herbal Hors d'oeuvres at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7. This workshop introduces several delicious recipes just in time for the holidays. Participants will learn the techniques to prepare several hors d'oeuvres made from herbs and complimentary ingredients, followed by a taste-test as a finale to the afternoon. $11; registration required.
