To the editor:
I am writing to endorse my fellow Cazenovia Village Trustee David Porter for re-election, and to encourage you to vote for him on June 19.
Though it may seem easy, being a village trustee is hard work and not to be undertaken lightly. Over the past two years Dave has stepped enthusiastically into the job and effectively handled an increasing volume of work on behalf of village residents.
—He has used his professional engineering background to conduct energy use evaluations and forecasts for village buildings and to evaluate alternatives for cost-reducing energy systems. Additionally, his engineering background is valuable during the review of numerous engineering contracts and documents related to village projects.
—As fire commissioner he oversees Fire Department issues, helping with the purchase of the 6 Farnham St. property and evaluating options for a possible future bunking facility for student fire fighters.
—As commissioner of parks and recreation, he manages the Lakeside boat launch, hiring, training and scheduling stewards, overseeing the budget and negotiating solutions to the inevitable issues that arise. He evaluates boat launch data and presents suggestions for program improvements to the Village Board, Cazenovia Lake Association and the Lake Watershed Council.
—He presides at meetings of the Joint Recreation Commission, this year heading the search for a new director for the Summer Youth Recreation Program.
—He serves as the liaison to CACDA, working with grants to rehabilitate Carpenter’s Barn and serves on the steering committee for CACDA’s Greater Cazenovia Art Trail project.
—He handles employee health insurance issues, finding ways to reduce Village health insurance costs while developing options for improved coverage for village employees.
Dave is a 25 year resident of Cazenovia and a licensed professional engineer. After 20 years with Stearns & Wheler, he now works for Bergman Associates in Syracuse. In addition to his trustee responsibilities he has served on the Board of the Cazenovia Public Library and is active in the Lions Club and the Cazenovia Youth Soccer Association.
The Cazenovia Village Board works as a team with each member taking responsibility for key areas. I would hate to lose Dave’s expertise and experience and his willingness to carry so much responsibility to insure that the village thrives.
I will vote for him and hope you will join me in doing so on June 19.
