Open Book Club continues at library

The “Open Book Club” for adults will resume at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 15 and at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 16, in the Cazenovia Public Library Community Room. All are welcome.

The Evening Club is reading “Girl with a Pearl Earring” by Tracy Chevalier this month.

History and fiction merge effortlessly in this brilliant novel about artistic visions and sensual awakening as seen through the eyes of the young woman who was the inspiration behind one of Vermeer’s finest paintings, regarded by some as the “Dutch Mona Lisa.”

In 17-century Delft, a strict social order presides, dividing the wealthy and deprived, Catholic and Protestant, master and servant. When 16-year-old Griet goes to work as a maid in the home of Delft’s most celebrated painter, she is expected to know her place. But in the Vermeer household, dominated by his mercurial spouse and her fearsome mother, Griet soon catches the eye of the master.

Captivated by Griets’ calm demeanor, intuitive spirit, and attraction to art, Vermeer begins to draw her into his world — a complex place of exotic color and alluring light, shifting shadows, and indescribable splendor.

The Afternoon Club is reading “Remarkable Creatures,” also by Tracy Chevalier.

A voyage of breakthroughs, a meeting of two extraordinary women, and remarkable setting enrich this novel. From the moment she’s struck by lightning as an infant, it is clear that Mary Anning is marked for importance.

On the windswept, English coast, Anning learns that she has “the eye,” and finds what no one else can observe. When Mary uncovers an odd fossilized skeleton in the cliffs near her dwelling, she sets the religious fathers on edge, the townspeople to cruel rumors and the scientific world ablaze.

But when Mary finds an unlikely hero in prickly Elizabeth Philpot, an exile from London who also loves combing the beaches, the women discover that camaraderie is their greatest ally.

Both the Afternoon Club and the Evening Club are free and open to the public. Books are available at the circulation desk and all are welcome.
