“The tax dollars are not paying for this,” Darby said. Forfeited money is used to fund extra expenditures, such as repairs on Air 1 or other non-budgeted items.

Balloni says once the helicopter does return to service, they will begin charging for medical transports as a commercial helicopter. That approval was granted by the FAA in January.

The next major fundraiser for Air 1 will be the second annual poker run, sponsored by Western Area Volunteer Emergency Services. The poker run will be June 16, and more information is available on their website, wavesambulance.com.
