LETTERS: Thank you to LRC

— To the editor:

How many times have you put your faith in politicians and been let down? I am a local Boy Scout working on my Eagle project, and I needed funds. My project is to make care packages for U.S. soldiers serving overseas, packages that will make our warriors’ sacrifices a bit more bearable, while reminding them just how much the folks back home appreciate everything they do.

I had gathered about a quarter of the supplies I needed for the packages when my project’s budget took a turn for the red. That was when I reached out to a friend for ideas about fundraising. He connected me with the Lysander Republican Committee Chairman Mike Bishoff, through whom I made an appeal to the committee and the community to help get my project back on track and, more importantly, to help get these care packages on a flight to Afghanistan.

I might be young, but even I know that when politicians get involved, the outcome tends to be rather a letdown.

Not so in this case.

The committee really came through for me, and together we have raised enough funds, by my estimation, for me to finish this project and get some support to our brave men and women still fighting around the world. I can't thank Mr. Bishoff and the committee enough, and I'm sure the soldiers will feel the same way.
