Skaneateles Two of Coach Jill King’s most record-setting athletes were also recently named Academic All Americans. King describes Skaneateles High School seniors Kaela Fiutak and Rachael DeWitt as “two of the most accomplished athletes ever in the pool.”
Fiutak and DeWitt became Academic All Americans when they “blew the academic standards out of the water,” King said.
Fiutak, a state level diver, and DeWitt, a record-setting swimmer, are both in the top ten in their class, with weighted averages over 100, said King. “They are elite in swimming and academics.”
King said Dewitt has six school records and three sectional records, in addition to having been on four sectional championship teams. She was a team captain for two years. In addition, she participates in the music/drama program and serves on the school’s PRIDE Committee. She plans to study environmental science, and has been on winning Envirothon teams.
Fiutak holds both of the school’s diving records and won the state qualifier meet. She went to states, where she placed 25th. In addition, she is a leading pole vaulter for the track team. She went to states for indoor track this winter, placing 9th in the pole vault. She will pole vault for Washington Lee University next year. She has also competed at the state level in gymnastics.
A brief ceremony recognizing the swimming records of both Fiutak and DeWitt was held Tuesday, March 20, at the High School pool.
