Signs of summer: Town of Marcellus approves ‘Monster Mile Race’ for July

— The Marcellus Town Board met Monday and approved a motion to bring a Monster Mile Race to Marcellus Park.

The run is scheduled for July 13 at 6:30 p.m. It is part of series of mile races. Event organizers are holding similar races in Skaneateles and Auburn.

“It’s a proper use of the park,” Town Supervisor Dan Ross said. “It’s a good recreation program. Road races like that are very popular.”

Marcellus Park will be busy this summer. The board approved a series of concerts with the recreation department on Thursday evenings.

As of publication date three groups have reached agreements with the town — Marcellus Bluegrass Artists (June 14), Mere Mortals (July 12) and Thunder Canyon (July 26).

Another recreation department offering is four series of swim lessons at the Skaneateles YMCA.

The recreation department is also sponsoring four trips — Lake George (May 16), Stockbridge, Mass. (June 20), East Aurora, N.Y. (July 11),and Asheville, N.C. (Sept. 23-28).

The board authorized the purchase of a new dump truck. The 2012 International Terrastar GVWR cost $49,900.

“It’s a small dump truck,” Ross said. “The money for this is currently in the budget. This truck will allow us to haul the excavator around.”

“Right now we use big dump trucks for small jobs. Cleanup jobs,” Ross added. “Those kind of things, we’ll use the small dump truck for that. It’s just a matter of keeping the equipment up to date.”

A motion to authorize HR Consultants to do a salary update was tabled. Board members Peter Hakes and Kevin O’Hara asked if the board could do the work on its own.

“Over the past 10 to 12 years we’ve had two salary studies done which compares the salaries we pay and the duties of our employees, with similar duties in other municipalities,” Ross said. “It established for us an apples to apples comparison on non-elected town employees with a low point, a mid point and a high point in the salary range.”
