J-D budget calls for no instructional cuts

— Jamesville-DeWitt’s proposed budget of $47,835,195 for 2012-13, up almost 1 percent from last year, doesn’t call for the elimination of any instructional positions.

That’s a drastic change from the 20 cuts levied in 2011-12, when the district had a budget of $47.36 million. In fact, the only position being cut is the director of curriculum and personnel, as the person who held the spot is retiring.

New in this budget is an expected $65,000 expense on testing mandated by the state as a way to evaluate teachers, as well as more than $100,000 for new materials to help students meet new curriculum standards.

In a show of dedication by the community, Save JD Sports was able to raise enough dough to reinstate the once-cut 13 coaching positions. The positions are saved for this year, but there is no guarantee the spots will be put back in the budget in the future.

On April 2, the school board expects to adopt the budget.
