The Cazenovia Academic Decathlon Team competed in the Section III regional competition on Jan. 28, and came in first place overall, winning 25 individual medals and placing second in the “Super Quiz” category.
Placing first among the six participating area schools guaranteed the squad a spot in the New York State Academic Decathlon Competition on March 9 and 10 at Onondaga Community College.
West Genesee and North Syracuse took second and third places, respectively, and will also compete in the statewide contest at OCC.
At the Section III regional competition, individual overall trophies were won by team members Maxwell Blair, Robert Louis, David Martellock and Kyle Polhamus.
“This was the first time I ever won a trophy in anything!” Louis said, after receiving his award.
Together, decathletes Danielle Axelson, Blair, Avery Stone-Fish, Louis, Martellock, Samuel Medbury, Darren Mahaich, Polhamus, Kilian Crowley and Riley Lloyd competed in seven events.
Each competition is planned around a central theme, and the subject for this year’s regional contest was “Imperialism.”
The team had been busy preparing since last May, reading and analyzing Joseph Conrad’s “Heart of Darkness” and studying subjects such as economics, physics, math and art.
As students collected their medals, team members celebrated their victories and began looking to the upcoming state competition
The team, coached by Martin Kelly and Christie Brenneck, continues to study and prepare for both the speech and interview portions of the state contest, in hopes of continuing on to the national competition.
