Volunteer Connections: March launches Vera House 2012 White Ribbon Campaign

— The primary goal of the House 2012 White Ribbon Campaign is to raise awareness about domestic and sexual violence and the ways our community is working to end that violence. Vera House has many volunteer opportunities for crisis and support line coverage, sexual assault advocates, family court support assistance, support and assistance at Vera House shelters, general office assistance and pet foster care. Contact Community Services The Contact 24-hour Hotline provides support for people calling in with concerns about loneliness, relationship problems, job issues, parenting, grief and depression. If you are interested in becoming a Contact Hotline volunteer, please call Laurie Best at 251-1400, ext. 112. Hotline volunteer training will begin March 14 at 6520 Basile Rowe in East Syracuse. Purr-fect volunteer opportunities for pet lovers Area rescue shelters are filled to capacity and need more help than ever to care for the dogs and cats waiting for adoption. Help is needed for cleaning cages and litter pans, sweeping and mopping floors, greeting visitors and answering the phone, clerical help with mailings, laundry, filling food and water dishes, grooming and playing with and exercising the animals. All of these places require orientation and/or training sessions and most of these shelters will allow teen volunteers ages 15 to 18 with signed parental consent.
