Manlius On Sunday, July 22, The Fayetteville-Manlius All Sports Booster Club will host the inaugural Fay-Man Race of Champions 5K Road Race and kids 1K Fun Run.
All proceeds from the race will go to the Booster Club General Fund to be available for use by all F-M sports teams. As school budgets are tightened and public funding reduced, the scholastic sports programs in the schools fall under major scrutiny.
The F-M Booster Club has been working closely with school officials to assure FM maintains its outstanding sports program. With this support comes the need for monetary contributions from fund raising efforts.
The All-Sports Booster Club increasingly gets called on to provide dollars for uniforms, equipment and transportation costs. The current financial forecast is that the need will only increase in the coming years.
With the incredible success of both the F-M boys and girls cross country teams over the years, a 5K race provides an extension of the running program at F-M and a fitting fund-raiser for the Booster Club.
While the cross country runners will not be running on race day, they will be volunteering their time and expertise to make sure the race goes off without a hitch. Every sports team at F-M will also be providing volunteers to assist in the effort of making this a premier running event for our area.
The community has already shown its support with many generous donations including major sponsors Raymour and Flanigan, GIANT Auto Sales, Nike and Pepsi. Nike and the local Fleet Feet store are providing prizes that anyone racing can win.
Runners of all ages and abilities are welcome. Walkers are welcome too! The 5K road race will start and finish at Fayetteville-Manlius High School, beginning at 9 a.m. Race timing is being provided by Leone Timing and there will be prizes awarded to top finishers in each age group.
There will also be a kid’s 1K Fun Run on the grounds of the High School. The Fun Run will begin at 10 a.m. and incorporate some of the features from the Nike Cross National course in Portland, Oregon, including hay bales to jump over.
To register for the race, please go to www.fmsportsbooster.com. Race fees are $25 for the 5k ($30 day of) and $10 for the kids Fun Run. Free race T-shirts will be provided to all runners registered by July 18.
