Air 1 Foundation Poker Run slated for Saturday

The second annual Air 1 Foundation Poker Run will be held Saturday, June 16.

The poker run will bring motorcycles, classic cars, hot rods, emergency vehicles and all other interested vehicles and participants through a tour of local fire departments, starting in the town of Onondaga and ending in the town of Pompey. The ride will begin at 11 a.m., with registration opening at 9 a.m. at Taunton Fire Department. Registration is $20, which includes a meal at the end location -- Pompey Hill Field Days.

All proceeds from the event go to support the foundation, which is a not-for-profit created to support the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit and the Air 1 public safety helicopter.

The poker run is the latest in a string of fundraising efforts for Air 1, which has included receiving an FAA charter to fly commercial, in order to charge for medevacs.

Warren Darby, Onondaga County Undersheriff, said: “Air 1 is a full service public safety tool. It truly is an example of consolidation. It is primarily a law enforcement ship that deals with police incidents, a fire ship that is equipped to provide rescues in remote areas, assist in fighting fires with the Bambi Bucket and look for the hot spots at a fire scene for the fire department's incident commander, and finally an air medical ship that provides advance life support to trauma victims and gives prompt transport to the hospital.

"Air 1 saves lives, for both of our citizens and public safety personnel! We need to keep this important resource available in Onondaga County.”

The Poker Run is sponsored by WAVES, or Western Area Volunteer Emergency Services, which provides the town of Camillus with its primary ambulance service as well as the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office with Flight Paramedics for Air 1.
