— The families of Van Buren Elementary School recently celebrated spring with a carnival held on May 18. The theme of the carnival was the Renaissance.

A local Renaissance group dressed in period costumes lead children through several activities including soap making and weaving. The Syracuse Silver Knights indoor soccer team loaned the school its mascot who attended dressed in full armor for the evening.

This year, instead of charging families to attend the event, the school’s PTA held a three-day food drive for the Baldwinsville Food Pantry and collected more than 1,200 food items. In exchange for donations of food items, families received meals at the carnival compliments of Abbott’s Catering.

The North Area Family YMCA donated all of the games for the evening, and AMF Strike N Spare Lanes donated family fun packs and 200 free games of bowling as prizes.
