The local group In Your Pace Running Club invites all area runners and walkers to the fourth annual Mad. Co.w 5K Race, a Route 20 road challenge event taking place on Saturday, Aug. 4 in Nelson.
The 3.1 mile run/walk will take participants through the heart of cow country in the Nelson dairying region. The race is In Your Pace’s ode to the rich history of the Holstein cow and Madison County, which (also historically) has been abbreviated to Mad. Co.
But, it isn’t all about the cows.
In Your Pace Running Club is an informal group of friends consisting of fun-loving and charitable recreational runners of all ages, sizes and athletic abilities. The bighearted group undertakes a number of charitable projects each year in addition to hosting the annual Mad Co.w Run.
The group’s projects have included donating in support of Wanderer’s Rest, adopting two miles of Route 13, assisting with RSVP’s Adopt a Platoon Fundraiser and manning a water station during Syracuse’s Ironman Triathalon.
This year, proceeds from the Mad. Co.w run will benefit local charities and Community Action Partnership for Madison County, a local non-profit organization that helps individuals and families in Madison County become and remain self-sufficient. Last year, the event raised $3,600.
“We are grateful for the generosity of this group to contribute to our community. We’re honored to be collaborating with them,” said Community Action Partnership of Madison County Executive Director Julie Dale.
With a lucky runner drawing, raffle drawing and awards to top male and female finishers by age group, the event will be a good time for a good cause. Runners are just warned to watch where they step — the Holsteins are still here.
The race will begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 4. in front of the Nelson Town Office, one quarter mile north of Route 20 on Nelson Road.
Pre-registration must be received by July 25 ($15 under 17 years, $20 adult). Entry forms and waivers are available at inyourpace.com or capmadco.org.
Race day registration is offered for $25 from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m.
No dogs or strollers are permitted at the event. The race is a USA Track & Field 2011 Sanctioned Event.
