Often, those over age 55 need a hand from time to time, especially if one is living alone. Tasks like flipping a mattress, putting up storm windows, cleaning the garage or weeding can be challenging.
From Oct. 1 to Oct. 7, Community Resources for Independent Seniors will offer “Lend a Hand Week.” Teams of volunteers will assist seniors and people with special needs with various tasks in the Cazenovia, Nelson and Fenner areas.
Professional work such as plumbing, electrical and carpentry will not be included.
CRIS is seeking volunteers willing to lend a hand for a morning or an afternoon from Oct. 1 through 7.
Volunteers (must be age 16 and older) will be organized into teams of two and provided information about the person they will be assisting and the nature of the work.
Most help requested will likely be cleaning, hanging pictures, replacing light bulbs or batteries or simple yardwork and other small tasks.
Volunteers with computer skills may also be requested to provide some basic computer help.
Those who are able to donate a little time are reminded their help will go a long way for their neighbors and community.
Part of CRIS’s mission is to help seniors live in their homes as long as possible, and one way to help accomplish this is by coordinating “neighbors helping neighbors.” Call CRIS at 655-5743 to register to become a volunteer. Registration forms may also be accessed online at the CRIS website, callcris.org. Registration forms may either be mailed to the CRIS office at PO Box 99, Cazenovia, NY 13035 or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
CRIS-CAT, a program of CRIS, is also a free transportation service for residents ages 55 and over. CRIS-CAT provides rides for residents in the towns of Cazenovia, Fenner and Nelson to medical appointments, shopping, grooming appointments and events. Call 655-0612 three to five days ahead.
