LETTERS: Many thanks from Cazenovia July Fourth footraces

To the editor:

On a warm Fourth of July morning, we had approximately 1,000 participants entered in the l0-mile race around the lake, 5-kilometer run and one-mile fun run.

It appeared everyone had an enjoyable time. We hope to see you all once again next year, including those visiting from 23 states. Incidentally, the first run around the lake in 1972 was organized by Bruce Fredrikson and had 81 participants.

We would like to thank our generous sponsors Chary Griffin/HUNT Real Estate, Dr. Ralph Stevens/Oneida Medical Imaging, John Dermody Insurance Group and Ralph Monforte/ Cazenovia Jewelry.

Thanks also to River Valley Foods for their always-popular popsicles, to Tops for their gift card for finish line food, to Breuggers for the discounted pricing on their bagels, to H.P. Hood for the chocolate milk, to McDonalds for waterstop cups and to the Cazenovia Republican for their generous support publicizing the race.

We also appreciate the continued support of CAVAC, Cazenovia Fire Department Rescue Squad, Cazenovia Village Police Department, the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and the town and village of Cazenovia.

Thanks to our key volunteers/coordinators — most of whom having been a part of the organizing committee for many years; Kurt Wheeler, Brian Ellithorpe, Jason Hyattt, Cindy Clark, JT Hall, Maureen Carroll, Barb Cudney, Marla Jabbour, Dave Oja and Mark Driscoll. The T-shirts were designed by Megan Buckner, Cazenovia College senior. Larry Ripley’s shower and water at the finish line were a big hit again with this year’s hot conditions.

Needless to say, we could not put on this event without the generous support of more than 100 volunteers who hand out packets, handle water stops, call out times along the course, control the traffic, set up cones, mark the course, cheer on the runners, pass out refreshments and clean up after the event.

No matter what your contribution to the 40th Annual July Fourth foot races, thank you so much. We hope to see all of you next year. As always, we received nice compliments from the runners which are a credit to each of you.

The races are administered by the Cazenovia High School cross country and volleyball programs and the Syracuse Chargers Track Club. Proceeds from the race help support ongoing athletic programs for all these groups.
