Cazenovia wrestlers win OHSL Liberty/Patriot meet

Lakers put five in finals; Petroff takes 120-pound title

As the newly-minted Onondaga High School League Liberty division regular-season champions, the Cazenovia wrestling team now hit the post-season circuit, which would consume three consecutive weekends.

It all began with Saturday’s OHSL Liberty/Patriot tournament, where the Lakers repeated its regular-season glory, earning 195 points to beat 11 other opponents as Hannibal (178.5 points) and Port Byron (157 points) rounded out the top three.

Cazenovia prevailed despite having just one individual champion – Nick Petroff, at 120 pounds. He beat John DeCarlo (Tully) 2-0 in the semifinals and, in a tough title match, got past Hannibal’s Greg Hadcock 6-3.

Four other Lakers reached the championship round, though. Carter Biviano’s pin of Austin Parker (Port Byron) led to the 106-pound, where he lost to Zach Ruggles (Marcellus) 13-5. After Jake Wilson (160 pounds) romped past Collin Ennulat (Jordan-Elbridge) 14-5 in the semifinals, he lost a tight 3-1 decision to Homer’s Mark Dove in the title match.

In the 182-pound semifinal, Dan Phillips got past Mitch Murray (Port Byron) 13-10, only to lose in the title match to Kadire Phililps (Institute of Technology Central) 13-7. Hayden Polhamus reached the 195-pound final with a 64-second pin of Tully’s Jacob French, but saw Port Byron’s Nick Griffin pin him in the championship round.

Teddy Kugler pulled out third place at 138 pounds, edging Matt Norris (Homer) 9-7, with Brad Lucas getting third at 285 pounds when he pinned Hannibal’s Dakota Carswell in 2:26.

Aaron LaHart (99 pounds), Dylan Evans (126 pounds) and Awng Hung (132 pounds) each finished fourth, Evans losing a 2-1 overtime match to Skaneateles’ Tyler Saunders. Dan Cossitt (152 pounds) pinned Chris Mueller (Fabius-Pompey) in 1:23 for fifth place, with John Nannery fifth at 220 pounds.

Just before that league gathering, the Lakers tuned up with a home meet against Onondaga, easily getting past the Tigers 63-18 at Buckley Gym.
