SPEEDY DUO LEAD LAKERS: Ashley Winn, left, and Jillian Vogl are shown in action at Colgate earlier this season competing in the 55-meter dash. The two led the Lakers to a first place finish among 25 teams at the Bob Grieve Memorial Invitational at OCC on Jan. 16. Winn captured the 55, Vogl won the 300 and both helped the sprint medley relay team to a new school record. The victory kept the Lakers undefeated through seven invitational meets against 83 competing teams so far this season. Kurt Wheeler
Undefeated though six Mohawk Valley Indoor Track Association Invitationals to start the season, the Cazenovia indoor track girls were pleased with their start, but couldn’t help but wonder how they would fare in the larger, more competitive meets of the CNY Indoor Track Association held at the new SRC Arena at OCC.
They got their answer on Jan. 16 with another win. The Lakers scored 54 points to top the 25 team field with class AA and A powerhouses Fayetteville Manlius, Jamesville DeWitt, Cicero-North Syracuse and West Genesee rounding out the top five.
The Lakers rose to the challenge of the intense competition to not only win but achieve a series of new school and personal record performances as well.
Paige Biviano led off the meet with a dramatic win in the 55-hurdles, edging rival Katie Osborne from C-NS by .04 seconds to win the event in a school-record time of 8.96 seconds. Biviano’s time was the fastest in Section III this season. Biviano also high-jumped 5’2’’ for second place behind section-leader Maggie Fuller of J-D. Emily Willard leaped 4-8 to finish just out of scoring position for the Lakers.
Ashley Winn also met the competition in dramatic form. With just a .01 second lead over Kamisha Tucker of Fowler on the Section III leader board and field of other intense competitors, Winn exploded to a new school-record time of 7.40 to beat Tucker by .16 seconds.
Teammate Jillian Vogl was equally impressive in the 300, capturing first in 42.69 seconds, tops in CNY meets this season.
The duo then came back to lead off the Lakers’ sprint medley relay team with Winn running the opening 400 in 1:01.9 and Vogl covering the next 200 in 26.2.
Freshman Ashley Kent ran her 200 in 29.7 before handing the baton to Caroline Marshall who ran the fastest 800 meter leg ever for a Laker in 2:25.4.
