The Cazenovia sixth-grade boys basketball team won four straight games to win the Eighth Annual Patrick Fetterman Basketball Tournament on Jan. 15 at the Clark Sports Center in Cooperstown.

In the first contest, Cazenovia beat a tough Cobleskill team 27-19. Leading scorers were Daniel Kent and Tim Burr. Ryan Modzeleski and Alex Nowak led a strong defensive effort with two steals each.

In the second round, the Lakers faced an outmatched squad from Broadalbin Perth. Cazenovia raced to a halftime lead of 16-3 with Matt Regan’s crowd pleasing three-point shot at the buzzer. Kevin Stalder led the Lakers with 12 points and seven rebounds in the 31-7 win.

In the semifinal round, Cazenovia again faced Cobleskill.

Alex Pezzi scored seven of his nine points in the first half and Stalder scored 11 of his 13 in the second half in the 31–25 victory.

Nick Barna and Eric Ketcham continued their unselfish play with five and four assists, respectively.

In the championship game, the Lakers faced tournament favorite Cooperstown.

The hometown team led nearly the entire game with the Lakers catching up and tying the score in the final minutes.

But strong defensive efforts by Joey Gates and Pezzi, along with Cazenovia’s deep bench and dominance on the glass, proved too much for Cooperstown.

A free throw by Kent with 10 seconds remaining sealed the 26-25 victory. The Lakers were led by Thomas Bragg’s nine points and nine rebounds and Kent’s seven points and seven rebounds.

Stalder was named MVP. He was joined on the all-tournament team by Bragg.

The Cazenovia sixth-grade squad’s record is now 6–2. The season continues in early February at the Rome YMCA tournament.
