WG swimmers power past Auburn

In an impressive start to the 2012 portion of its schedule, the West Genesee boys swim team went to Auburn Friday night and mostly relied on its depth to put together a 92-78 victory over the Maroons.

Points were gained quickly when the Wildcats’ quartet of Mike O’Donnell, Jake Mullet, Tyler Zapisek and Ian Bushnell rose up in the 200 medley relay and won that opener in a time of 1:45.49.

Later, in the 100 butterfly, Tyler Zapisek would prevail in 58.03 seconds, while Collin Zapisek saved his big work for the 200 freestyle, earning first place in 1:54.17 as WG took a 22-8 lead.

Auburn fought back with Lucas Zelehowsky and Collin Mitchell each winning two events. Zelehowsky was first in the 200 individual medley (2:00.74) and 500 freestyle (5:02.74), while Mitchell took the 50 freestyle (23.36 seconds) and 100 freestyle (51.09 seconds).

At one point late in the meet, WG only led by four points, saved by a series of second and third-place efforts that, point-wise, made up for the wins from Zelehowsky and Mitchell.

but that was before Louis Ciarla, in 1:12.80, earned first place in the 100 breaststroke. And in the closing 400 freestyle relay, Bushnell, Mike Mellen and the Zapisek brothers would tear to first place in 3:29.26, one of the fastest Section III times of the winter.
