Durgee students named winners in essay contest

— Durgee Junior High School eighth-graders Brina Reed, back, Nicholas Spurchise, seated left, and Maria Ragonese were winners in the local portion of the 2012-13 Elks Americanism Essay Contest, sponsored by the Liverpool Elks Lodge 2348. This year’s theme is “Why I am Proud to Pledge Allegiance to Our Flag.” Spurchise placed first, Ragonese earned second place and Reed placed third in the local competition. Their essays have moved on to the Elks district level of the national competition.
