Junior claims first Wildcat title since 2008

— Tyler Heggelke (120 pounds) went 2-2 and took sixth place. Vasyl Podarunok (220 pounds) pinned B’ville’s Jake Florack in the first round, only to lose in the quarterfinals to Maurice Russell (Institute of Technology Central), while Matt Kemp (195 pounds) lost in the first round.

Meanwhile, Marcellus senior Jon Cavaretta impressed with a third-place in Division II (small schools) at 220 pounds as his team earned sportsmanship award honors from the local wrestling officials’ association.

Cavaretta opened with an 8-2 victory over Cooper Pitman (Skaneateles) in the first round, moving on to the quarterfinals, where he fell 3-1 to Tully’s Drew Wintermute as Zach Ruggles, at 106 pounds, lost in the first round to Adam Hutchinson (South Jefferson) 6-3.

Undeterred, Cavaretta won three straight matches in the consolation bracket. He pinned Dave Kiernan (Homer) in 2:53, edged past Josh Langley (Holland Patent) 3-2 and, in the consolation bracket final, exacted revenge against Wintermute, winning a 9-0 decision to improve his record to 31-6 for the season.
